Hooray for press picking up the story of our upcoming fundraiser.
string beans curl towards the light… just about ready to be picked. (also at the Hell’s Kitchen Farm Project rooftop farm).
you provide our grassroots volunteer run rooftop farm and food justice organizing project with much needed manpower and moneypower and we are so grateful for it.
but.
your shock at the amount of money it costs for us to host you and do the project is annoying. especially when i am asking for amounts of money that are about .000000000000000000000000000001% of the profits your corporation makes and maybe a sixth of what your midlevel employees make in a month.
being shocked over minuscule amounts of money that don’t even begin to atone for the destruction your capitalist needs create is a serious case of whining.

A personal note: This collaborative Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood organization has been my entire life since I moved to NYC and began food justice and anti-hunger work here. From our small beginnings sitting around a table having a conversation about food justice and access to United Way taking a chance on a rag tag group of small organizations to the 60+ volunteers who hauled 7 tons of soil to the roof and the countless pigeons who proved insatiable but eventually manageable, it’s been quite a year and a half. Because we are a start up, we depend almost completely on individuals to sustain us into the future. Even if you cannot make it, PLEASE consider donating. (And hey, reblog it!)
First sunflower at the Hell’s Kitchen Farm Project Rooftop Farm. Summer isn’t over till we say it is!
Hells Kitchen Farm
Sitting at my desk at the food pantry as an AmeriCorps VISTA this past year, I was daydreaming, as usual, about how much I wanted to create an urban agriculture hub in the neighborhood. I imagined a collaborative of neighborhood organizations coming together to fight hunger in ways that put power back in the hands of residents. A rooftop farm where people could learn how to grow their own food, create new structures for food distribution in the neighborhood, and take back control of the food system while also growing food for the residents most in need.
